Matt has thirteen years of natural resource management experience from
the public and private sectors. With Blue Mountain, Matt has served as
lead investigator for several ecosystem management plans, which addressed
forest restoration, wildfire mitigation, noxious weed control and riparian
management. As a research associate with the USDA Forest and Range Experiment
Station, he designed and implemented original research studies to investigate
causes of landscape diversity and vegetative responses to disturbance
within ponderosa pine forests of the Colorado Front Range. He has extensive
experience conducting biological inventories and has implemented forest-fire
research both regionally and internationally. As a research associate
at the Woods Hole
Research Center, he assisted in the implementation of a pioneering
study that assessed the fire susceptibility of primary tropical rainforest
along the arc of deforestation in the northeastern Amazon
of Brazil. Matt also worked a ranger for the National Park Service, administered
erosion control practices for the Natural Resource Conservation Service,
and implemented wildfire mitigation and forest stewardship programs for
the Colorado State Forest Service.
Matt holds a M.S. in Rangeland Ecosystem Science from Colorado State
University and a B.S. in Resource Management and Forestry from SUNY
College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He is a member of the
Society of American
Foresters and Ecological
Society of America. Matt is a Society of American Foresters Certified
Forester, International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist,
Natural Resource
Conservation Service Technical Service Provider and certified wetland
delineator. He holds an Interagency Wildfire Suppression card and has
attended numerous conferences regarding forestry, fire and ecological
restoration. Matt established Blue Mountain Environmental Consulting
in 2002 to promote sustainable resource management and to better serve
land owners, managers and environmental professionals.
